OpenOffice.org!
Let's face it, presentation tools software such as Microsoft PowerPoint does
not come cheap. In fact for many individuals and small organizations it is prohibitively
expensive. So what do you do if you're on a tight budget (and who isn't!) yet
need to produce professional computer-based multimedia presentations? Luckily
the answer is perhaps simpler (and cheaper) than you may have realized. Use the OpenOffice.org suite of programs.
OpenOffice.org is a collection of programs designed to mirror those available
in Microsoft Office. And the good news is that it's free to download and start
using today! In addition to a word processor, a spreadsheet, a graphics package
and a database program, you'll also find Impress, a presentation tools
software that is OpenOffice.org's equivalent to PowerPoint. I have been using
Impress for some time now, certainly long enough to get a feel for it, and I
must say I am very impressed with it (excuse the pun!)
If you are at all familiar with PowerPoint, you'll feel at home almost
immediately with Impress, as it has similar features and look-and-feel to
PowerPoint. If on the other hand you're new to presentation tools software,
there's no better place to learn the ropes than with Impress.

OpenOffice.org Impress
But being free doesn't mean it's short
on features. I found Impress to be a very competent program for creating
effective presentations. It has an excellent set of tools, such as 2D and 3D
clip art, special effects, animation, and high-impact drawing tools, guaranteed
to make your presentations stand out. It can export presentations to Adobe Flash
(.swf) files, allowing you to play them on any computer with Flash player
installed. And you can easily convert files to PDF and html format. My only
gripe (and it's only a very small gripe as the program is free after all) is
that it suffers from a lack of ready-made presentation designs. However, as
Impress can read, edit and save files in Microsoft PowerPoint's .ppt format,
I don't regard this lack of ready-made presentation designs as a big issue.
And if you're wondering, Impress works on all common computer
platforms and is available in numerous languages.
OpenOffice.org is what, in the geeky world, would be called an open-source
set of programs. That means it is being continually developed and improved by a
dedicated community of enthusiasts. And being open source means that it's 100%
free to download and use - good news for you and me. You can use OpenOffice.org
for any purpose without restriction: private, educational, public
administration, commercial... you name it.
